Javier is living with his family in Baltimore, including his brother, David and his second-wife, Kate, and children, Gabe and Mariana, at the onset of the walker epidemic. When their father dies of cancer and turns, biting their mother, David takes her to the hospital, but doesn't return. After several months, Javier and Kate agree it was time to move on and set off with Gabe and Mariana on the road.
